News From the NRCHA Kalpowar Quarter Horses Celebration of Champions

The 2022 Kalpowar Quarter Horses Celebration of Champions continues all week in Fort Worth, Texas!

FEBRUARY 20 - The 2022 Kalpowar Quarter Horses Celebration of Champions wraps up today in Fort Worth, Texas, crowning seven new World Champions! Yesterday in the Western Bloodstock & Hashtags World's Greatest Horseman Finals one of the toughest and most talented field of bridle horses and riders rode for $100,000 while the World's Greatest Youth Horseman, presented by MARS EQUESTRIAN™, saw eight Youth make amazing fence runs to find their champion. It was a great show!

WORLD'S GREATEST HORSEMAN CROWNED
It was electric last night in the Western Bloodstock LTD & Hashtags World's Greatest Horseman Corey Cushing won his third title in the event aboard Hott Rod (by Hottish), bred by Austin Adams and owned by Lynne Wurzer.



The NRCHA Two Million Dollar rider said he knew the horse would never quit on him and the duo battled it out to the finish! For the composite top score of 893 the team earned a whopping $100,000 check!

Reserve Champion Phillip Ralls piloted his longtime partner in the show pen Call Me Mitch (by Metallic Cat), bred by James Eakin and owned by the Estelle Roitblat Living Trust, to a $50,000 payday with a composite 889. Complete results are at nrcha.com.

WORLD'S GREATEST YOUTH HORSEMAN CROWNED
Emily Kent's fence-only work topped the 8-rider Finals field with a 153 to clinch the World's Greatest Youth Horseman, presented by MARS EQUESTRIAN™! Riding CallMe Mister Mister (by Mister Dual Pep), owned by Leslie Kent and bred by Jim Babcock, Emily achieved her goal of being the first girl to win the title since the event's inception four years ago.

Reserve Champion Cutter McLaughlin was last year's winner. He rode CD Dee Vee Dee (by CD Lights), bred by Carol Rose and owned by his parents Jay and Wendy McLaughlin, to a composite 737.5, finishing 8 points behind Emily. Cutter was the high-scoring Youth steer stopping winner and was awarded the Robbie Schroeder Memorial Saddle for that event.


 

FEBRUARY 19 - The first round of the Western Bloodstock LTD. & Hashtags World's Greatest Horseman completed today in the Will Rogers Coliseum with the herd work. Sixty-six horse and rider teams rode into the herd, but none could top Jesse Lennox who marked a 227 in set two aboard Rocking P Ranch's Metallic Curveball (Metallic Cat x Cinca De Maya x Dual Rey). The pair earned $1,500 for the preliminary win!

 



The World's Greatest Horseman continues with the rein work preliminary on Tuesday, February 15, in the John Justin Arena. This year's champion will take home a $100,000 check following the Finals on Saturday, February 19.

FEBRUARY 18 - CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2021 WORLD CHAMPIONS!



WORLD'S GREATEST HORSEMAN NEWS
Scoring a 226, Corey Cushing and Hott Rod (Hottish x Sugars Smart Kitty x High Brow Cat), bred by Austin Adams and owned by Lynne Wurzer, roped the top score in the preliminary World's Greatest Horseman steer stopping earning $1,500 and a belt buckle from Gist Silversmiths. Congratulations!


The Western Bloodstock & Hashtags World's Greatest Horseman brings back the top 15 riders to the Finals on Saturday, February 19 in the Will Rogers Coliseum. Hott Rod and Cushing are among them!

The Western Bloodstock LTD. & Hashtags World's Greatest Horseman preliminary cow work was electric tonight! Last year's champion Shane Steffen and Gunna Be A Smart (Very Smart Remedy x Gunna Be Mine x Gunna Smoke) laid down a 227 to earn the top spot in a deep field of bridle horses.



Steffen and the 2012 black mare bred by J. Pearson Trust and owned by Kandu Ranch are among the 15 Finalists going for the $100,000 winner's check on Saturday, February 19!

A 149 in the steer stopping put Cutter McLaughlin and CD Dee Vee Dee (CD Lights x Shiners Missy Jay x Shining Spark), the returning champions, atop the World's Greatest Youth Horseman, presented by MARS Equestrian™! The rein work will run concurrent with the Youth Cow Horse tomorrow. The event continues on Saturday with herd work before the top eight go down the fence on Saturday night!

NRCHA YOUTH NEWS
Yesterday the NRCHA Youth members collected canned goods for donation to a local food pantry. The members, who turned in the canned goods at the NRCHYA meeting, gathered 700 pounds of canned items! At the meeting new NRCHYA officers were elected and the Youth received an inspirational talk from Clinton Anderson of Downunder Horsemanship.

FEBRUARY 17 - The preliminary rounds continue for several World Championship classes and you can catch all the action on nrcha.com through the live, free webcast provided by Equine Promotion. The Western Bloodstock & Hashtags World’s Greatest Horseman preliminaries continue today, Thursday, February 17, in the John Justin Arena with the steer stopping and cow work. The World’s Greatest Horseman, presented by MARS Equestrian™, will present back numbers before the youth also have their steer stopping event. It is going to be a great day of competition in Fort Worth, Texas!

TRES OSOS COW HORSE DERBY NEWS
The Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby Open ended with a bang yesterday, Wednesday, February 16. An incredible 158 entries went down the fence, and when it was all said and done, Selvarey and Sarah Dawson’s composite 664 (H:216.5/R:224/C:223.5) landed the Open Championship and a check worth $34,000.00.


Dawson and Selvarey aren’t new to the spotlight. The pair were the 2020 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity® Open Champions. Selvarey (Dual Rey x Shine Smarter x WR This Cats Smart), a 2017 mare owned by Sheri Jamieson and bred by Richard and Cheryl Winters, has picked up multiple checks with Dawson since then.

Only 1 point behind, 2017 stallion SJR Talkin Diamonds (Smooth Talkin Style x Shiners Diamond Girl x Shining Spark) and Corey Cushing’s 663 (H:221/R:224/C:218) took the Reserve Championship for owner/breeder San Juan Ranch. The pair collected $24,459.02. They also received the Chrome Cash Incentive, worth another $1,437.50.

One Ata Time (One Time Pepto x Hip Hip Sue Rey x Dual Rey), piloted by Ryan Gallentine, scored a 659 (H:220/R:221.5/C:217.5), winning the Intermediate Open title. Bred by Flag Ranch LLC, the 2017 stallion banked $10,142.73 for owner Steven Mattson.

 

After scoring a composite 649.5 (H:212/R:216/C:221.5), Playin With Cher (Mr Playinstylish x Bella Cher x Peptoboonsmal) and Joshua Briggs collected the Limited Open title and $2,911.79 for owners Kit and Charlie Moncrief. The Moncriefs also bred Playin With Cher, a 2017 mare.

 

Niteeprowwler (Don’t Stopp Believin x Shesa Smooth Pepto x Smooth As A Cat), a homebred 2018 stallion belonging to Sean and Ashley Flynn, and Sean landed the Level 1 Open title with their 641.5 composite (H:218/R:214/C:209.5). The took home a check worth $3,621.60.

With a composite 659 (H:218.5/R:222/C:218.5), WR Iceman (WR This Cats Smart x Lean Irish Playgirl x Paddys Irish Whiskey) led the Novice Horse with Corey Cushing. The 2018 stallion, who was bred by Mary Scott Brown, received a check worth $6,313.32 for owners Eric and Wendy Dunn.

 

NRCHA MILLION DOLLAR RIDER — SARAH DAWSON
Not only did Sarah Dawson of Perrin, Texas, earn the Open Derby Champion title for the 2022 Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby, she became the NRCHA’s newest Million Dollar Rider today! She can credit the 2017 mare Selvarey (Dual Rey x Shine Smarter x WR This Cats Smart), bred by Sarah’s parents Richard and Cheryl Winters, with carrying her to two major milestones—the 2020 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity® and now with this win, the Million Dollar Rider accolade.

In the Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby, the pair scored a composite 664 (R: 224 / H: 216.5 / Cow: 223.5) to take the win and earn owner Sheri Jamieson $. With that money, Sarah’s total NRCHA earnings are $1,040,809.21. At this show alone, she’s earned more than $48,000. Congratulations!
