Over the past few days, we have crowned our first set of Derby Champions, paid out over $146,000 in the Horse Show classes, and raised over $13,000 for the NRCHYA.



The prelims for the Open and Non Pro Derby have concluded, and 73 horses are advancing to the Open and Non Pro finals on Saturday, June 11th. 


The Youth Dunk Tank Fundraiser raised over $13,000 for our youth association. Thank you to everyone who participated in the afternoon of fun, especially Jayne Vatcher and Scott Aswege of Cre8ive Events and SJ Ranch, for donating the dunk tank and matching the money the kids raised!



The final three days of the DT Horses Western Derby will be filled with lots of activities. Be sure you are tuning into the live feed on the NRCHA website and keeping up with the scores through NRCHA Scoring powered by The Animal.

After a strong lead in the rein work, Eight Karat Diamond and Andrea Fappani won the Level 1 Open Derby title with a composite score of a 647.5 (R: 222/H:211/C:214.5). for owners Dr. Harry & Patricia Prince. This Andrea Fappani’s first win in the NRCHA.

Sliver of Majesty, shown by Chris Dawson, for owner Carrie King, marked a composite score of 653 (R:219.5/ H:217/ C:216.5) in the Novice Horse Derby. The pair won the tiebreaker against Metallic Catin Rey shown by Justin Wright with a 216.5 on the cow.

Cheryl Chown and The Metal Doctor added two more titles to their already impressive show. The pair won both the Non Pro Boxing Derby and Select Non Pro Boxing Derby titles with a composite score of 649 (H:217/R:213.5/C:218.5) and won a combined check of $3,534.36.

After marking the high score in the rein work, Jenna Stolting and her mare Kit Kat Royal were in the lead by 5-points going into the herd work. The pair secured the Level 1 Non Pro Boxing title with 632.5 (H:214/R:205/C:213.5) and won a check for $895.86.

Julie Donovan rode Her Lucky Cat to a composite score of 627.5 (H:208/ R:214.5/ C:205) to win the Level 1 Non Pro Derby.

Eric Freitas showed Meredith Gray to a composite score of 623 (H:209/ R:218/ C:196) to win the Select Non Pro Derby.

2022 Western Derby Class Winners

It was a clean sweep for Landri Lisac in the Non Pro Bridle classes. Lisac marked a 437 (R:216/C:221) on Cat Walks Into A Bar to win the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Limited Non Pro Bridle classes.

Eric Freitas and Cat Snacks marked a 423 composite score (R:215.5/C:207.5) to win the Select Non Pro Bridle.

Open Derby Herd Work Prelims Concluded  at the 2022 DT Horses NRCHA Western Derby

June 7 – We are well underway with the 2022 DT Horses Western Derby and have already crowned thirteen champions, seen some of the best Derby horses compete, and made more memories with our Cow Horse family.
After a tough two days in the herd pen, our Open Derby horses will get to rest while our Non Pro Derby takes center stage today. Today we will crown our first set of Derby Champions in the Non Pro Boxing divisions and watch the rein work for the Non Pro prelims.

2022 Western Derby Class Winners

After scoring a 145 in the herd work, Cheryl Chown and The Metal Doctor trailed the leader in the Non Pro Boxing by two points. Chown came back to mark a 146.5 in the rein work and an impressive 150 on the cow, securing the title in the Non Pro Boxing Spectacular and taking home a check of $3,940. The duo also claimed the title in the Non Pro Boxing class and the Select Non Pro boxing.

Lanham Brown showed Hesa Twisted Bet to a 145 in the herd work, putting him second in the standings going into the rein and fence work. The pair marked a 143.5 in the rein work and had the highest cow work score, a 148, securing them a check for $2,310. Brown and Hesa Twisted Bet also claimed the Non Pro Two Rein class title and a check for $1,356.

Linda Kiernan showed her gelding, FTR Smart Smoke to a 289.5 to win the Limited Non Pro Boxing. Marking a 144 in the rein work and a 145.5 on the cow, the pair earned first place and a check $480.

Paige Kramer rode Pepto Shiney Pistol to a 288 to claim the Intermediate Non Pro Boxing Title. The pair wo a check for $812 by marking a 144 in the rein work and a 145.5 on the cow.

June 4 – First Round of Champions Crowned at the 2022 DT Horses NRCHA Western Derby

With over 1,400 entries across the show, we are underway with the largest Western Derby to date! We are having a blast here in Scottsdale, Arizona with MASSIVE scores in our Open Derby rein work prelim, and we’re even seeing a few new faces around the event!

After scoring a massive 151 in the herd work, Remys Merada and Jared Jones led the Open Two Rein by three points. In the final set of the rein and cow work, Remys Merada and Jones marked a 147 in the rein work and a 148 on the cow, securing the title by three points and taking home a check of $5,500 for owner Lucava Farms, Inc.

Marking the highest score in the fence work secured Test Your Metallic and Caleb Jantz the Open Two Rein title. The duo marked a 146.5 in the rein work, followed by a 150 in the fence work. Test Your Metallic and Jantz marked a composite score of a 296.5 and took home $2,920 for owner, Jerry Baber.

Elise Mason and Sheza Haillion are no strangers to the winners circle. The duo started off with a 146 in the herd work, putting them in second going into the rein and cow work on Friday. Mason laid down a solid run in the rein work, marking a 143.5, and ended with a huge 149 on the cow, securing them a check for $450 and the Youth Boxing Spectacular title.

The 10-year-old from Colorado, was not phased that she was one of the youngest in the Youth Boxing. DJ Crafton showed Doctor Spark, a 2013 gelding, to a 293.5. The pair marked a 145.5 to be the highest score in the rein work and then marked a 148 on the cow. Crafton secured a check for $210 and took home the tiles in both the Youth Boxing and the 13 & under.

In the final class of the day, Josie Coughlin showed her mare, Playin In Color, to a 297 in the Box Drive class. The pair marked a 145 in the rein work and an impressive 152 on the cow. Coughlin secured a check for $1,155 and took home the title.
