It was a good night for reigning gold medalists at the Komatsu Equipment Days of ’47 Cowboy Games and Rodeo presented by Zions Bank in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night with all three advancing for a chance at yet another gold medal. Three of last year’s gold medalists competed tonight and they didn’t disappoint the Utah fans. Looking to add more gold to their resumes are steer wrestler Justin Shaffer, saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss and barrel racer Hailey Kinsel.
Kinsel of Cotulla, Texas, turned in the fastest time on the final night of preliminary action with a blistering time of 16.824 seconds. Tonight’s run was Kinsel and Sister’s quickest inside the Days of ’47 Arena over the last three years, setting yet another arena record. The reigning WPRA World Champion is looking to add more gold to her collection on Wednesday night. Kinsel and her fiancé PBR World Champion Jess Lockwood will both be back for the Gold Medal round. Taking second on the night was Michelle Darling aboard her great horse Martini with a time of 17.211. Darling of Medord, Okla., won the World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) Titletown Stampede in Green Bay, Wis., to qualify for Salt Lake. Her horse Martini is more famous than she having carried fellow barrel racer Stevi Hillman to the Wrangler NFR a couple of years ago. Hillman finished fourth on the night with a time of 17.507 seconds. Advancing thanks to the wild card route is Marne Loosenort and Dona Kay Rule.
A total of 288 competitors have taken their shot at a share of the over $1 million in prize money and a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal that will be awarded on Wednesday, July 24. There were 32 competitors in each of the following events: bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, women’s breakaway roping, barrel racing and bull riding.
Cody DeMoss riding Miss Independent
DeMoss of Heflin, La., scored 85.75 points on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Miss Independent to win the saddle bronc riding on July 23 and get a chance to defend his title. He will be looking for a three-peat performance having won this rodeo the last two years. Brody Cress of Hillsdale, Wyo., advanced as well with an 82.75 on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Fringe Benefit. Advancing via the wild card route were Logan Cook and Zeke Thurston both from the first performance.
Tanner Brunner
Tanner Brunner was the top steer wrestler on the night with a time of 4.08 seconds. Brunner of Ramona, Kan., advances along with 2018 Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo Gold Medalist Justin Shaffer. Shaffer of Hallsville, Texas, won second on the night in a time of 4.58 seconds. The contestants advancing as a Wild Card for the final round is Richard Coats and Will Lummus.
Richmond Champion riding Irish Eyes
Two NFR qualifiers advanced to the final round in the bareback riding with Richmond Champion leading the way. Champion of Stevensville, Mont., tallied an 84.25 on Sankey Rodeo’s Irish Eyes to earn his spot in the Gold Medal Round. Joining him will be Caleb Bennett. Earlier this year Bennett, originally from Utah and now making his home in Corvallis, Mont., was awarded the Lewis Feild Bareback Riding Award for being the bareback rider who performed the best at Salt Lake, Spanish Fork and Ogden in 2018. Bennett is hoping to repeat as he has now qualified for the Gold Medal Round at the Day of ’47 after recording an 83.75-point ride on Sankey Rodeo’s Thunder Monkey. Coming back as the wild cards for the Gold Medal Round in the bareback riding will be Garrett Shadbolt and Jake Stemo.
Tanner Tomlinson and Will Woodfin
Tanner Tomlinson and Will Woodfin turned in the fastest time of the night in the team roping and the second fastest of the four performances with a time of 5.23 seconds. Tomlinson of Angleton, Texas and Woodfin of Marshall, Texas added $3,200 each to their bank accounts but they will be hoping to add $50,000 on Wednesday. 2017 PRCA World Champion Erich Rogers of Round Rock, Ariz., will be looking to add a gold medal to his gold buckle on July 24. Rogers and Paden Bray of Granbury, Texas, was second during the fourth performance with a time of 5.28 seconds to advance to the finals. The two wild card teams to advance were Cory Clark/Douglas Rich and Ty Blasingame/Kyle Lockett.
Ty Harris
Tie-down roper Ty Harris of San Angelo, Texas, finished atop the leaderboard on Tuesday night to advance to the finals. Harris, who won the 2019 Reno Rodeo and was the 2018 PRCA Resistol Rookie of the Year, is hoping to add Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo Champion to his resume. Joining him from the fourth performance will be Cy Eames of Gooding, Idaho with an 11.34. The wild card spots went to Cimarron Boardman and Lane Livingston.
Jordan Jo Fabrizio
Jordan Jo Fabrizio of Canyon, Texas, turned in the fastest time on Tuesday night stopping the clock in 3.72 seconds and will be looking for her first ever medal tomorrow night. Joining her will be Nicole Baggerley-Sweazea of Las Cruces, N.M., who was second on the night with a time of 3.93. The wild card positions went to Abigayle Hampton and Josie Connor.
Trevor Kastner riding Hard & Fast
The three-time NFR qualifier and 2019 RodeoHouston champion Trevor Kastner will have a chance at a gold medal on Wednesday night after scoring 87 points on H.D. Page’s Hard & Fast. Kastner of Roff, Okla., will be joined by another NFR qualifier Boudreaux Campbell with an 83.75-point ride on H.D. Page’s Fat Head. The remaining positions for the Gold Medal round were filled by all that had a qualified ride over all four performance and Marco Eguchi who didn’t ride but had the longest buckoff time of all those non-qualified rides.
The full field of 32 competitors were divided into four groups of eight each and competed in one of the first four performances (July 19-20, 22-23). The top two from each performance, along with two via the Wild Card category now advance to the Gold Medal Round on July 24. The 10 competitors in each event in the Gold Medal Round will compete in a sudden-death format with the winner collecting a Gold Medal and $50,000 cash.
The Komatsu Equipment Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo presented by Zions Bank, is taking place at the $17.5 million state-of-the-art Days of ’47 Arena at the Utah State Fairpark, custom designed and built for rodeo. The venue—an outdoor arena located in the heart of Salt Lake City—features over 10,000 stadium-style seats.
For only the fifth time in the history of rodeo, riders will have an opportunity to compete for Gold, Silver or Bronze Medals. The first two times were in conjunction with the Olympic Winter Games in Calgary (1988) and Salt Lake City (2002), when rodeo was part of the Cultural Olympiad and the other two times being the Days of ’47 Cowboy Games and Rodeo in 2017 and 2018. This will be the first time for breakaway ropers as they were not part of the aforementioned events. The medals that will be awarded at the Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo will be produced by OC Tanner, the same company that made the Olympic medals for the champions of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
