NRCHA Derby Finals herd work complete in Scottsdale, Arizona

Friday, June 13 – The first leg of the Open and Non Pro finals action, the herd work, is complete at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack and Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby. The clean-slate finals continues on Saturday, June 13, at WestWorld of Scottsdale, with the rein work and fence work. The top combined score will ride away with the prestigious NRCHA Derby Champion title and a share of more than $330,000.

Derby Open Finals High Herd Work Score

Scooter Kat and NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Justin Wright topped the NRCHA Derby Open Finals herd work with 224. The 2015 stallion, owned by Eric Freitas, is sired by Kit Kat Sugar and out of of Scooters Daisy Dukes, by Dual Smart Rey.

In 2018, the California horseman and Scooter Kat were crowned Open Snaffle Bit Futurity reserve champions, and 2019 Stallion Stakes Open champions.

Derby Non Pro Finals High Herd Work Score

Thirteen riders advanced to the clean-slate NRCHA Derby Non Pro Finals. It was the familiar team of Abbie Burtenshaw Phillips and CR Tuff Guns N Roses that won the first of three events, the herd work, with a 219. The 2016 gelding is sired by Woody Be Tuff and out of Gypsy Rose Rey, by Dual Rey.

CD Survivor Memorial Open Bridle Spectacular Champion

Bridle spectaculars at NRCHA premier events were created to showcase the ultimate reined cow horse – the bridle horse. These seasoned veterans have spent years in programs that follow the traditional Vaquero training methods.

The CD Survivor Memorial Open Bridle Spectacular, named in honor of the late, great stallion owned by NRCHA breeder sponsor Holy Cow Performance Horses, is a $20,000-added event that is filled with some of the best horses and horsemen and women in the country.

The 2020 Holy Cow Performance Horses CD Survivor Memorial Open Bridle Spectacular championship belonged to Nick Dowers and High Stressin Cat (WR This Cats Smart x Playguns Melody x Playgun). Dowers, of Dyer, Nevada, piloted the 2013 gelding, owned by Clint Marshall to a 220 in the herd work, 222.5 in the reining and a 221 down the fence.

The 663.5 composite earned a $10,557 paycheck and a plethora of prizes including: a C.R. Morrison NRCHA bronze finished trophy,sponsored by the Arizona Quarter Horse Association, a Gist Silversmiths buckle, a gift ceritifacte from Sami Fine Jewelry. product from Platinum Performance and UltraCruz and get to inscribe their names on perpetual memorial trophy.

Intermediate Open Bridle Spectacular Champion

Cow horse fans know that Lyn Anderson is known for her amazing fence runs, and tonight, at WestWorld of Scottsdale, was no exception.

The California horsewoman guided Smokin Smart Cat (WR This Cats Smart x She Smokes Smart x Senors Lil Brudder) to an incredible 224.5 down the fence. Combined with their 217 from the herd work and 218 in the rein work, they captured the NRCHA Derby Intermediate Open Bridle Spectacular win for owner and long time friends, David and Barbara Archer. In addition to the $2,010 win check in the Intermediate Open, the duo also tied for fifth place in the Open, collecting another $3,901.

NRCHA Derby preliminaries complete in Scottsdale, Arizona

Thursday, June 11 – The preliminary go-rounds wrapped up on Thursday, June 11 at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack & Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby. After completing the third and final leg of the limited age event, the cow work, Open and Non Pro finalists were named and champions were crowned. Riders advancing to the clean-slate finals held on Saturday, June 13, at WestWorld of Scottsdale will be riding for the coveted Derby championship title and a payout totaling more than $330,000.

Derby Open Finalists Determined

After a smoking fence work run, Corey Cushing and Hott Rod (Hottish x Sugars Smart Kitty x High Brow Cat) lead the NRCHA Derby Open preliminary composite with a 669. Lynne Wurzer’s 2015 stallion marked a 222.5 in the herd work, 219.5 in the rein work and an incredible, go-round winning 227 down the fence.

It took a 653 or higher to advance to the Open Finals, a 646.5 or higher to qualify for the Intermediate Open Finals and a 637.5 to return to the Limited Open Finals.

Derby Level One Limited Open Champion

In true cow horse fashion, the Level One Limited Open Derby all came down to the fence work. It was a battle till the end for James Robert Marshall IV and Jesus Roman.

With a high cow work score of 219, JR Marshall and Playboy Powder (Bucks Little Playboy x Full Of Powder x Powder River Playboy) prevailed. The 2015 stallion, owned by Brett Weaver, scored a 214.5 in herd work and 214 in the rein work earlier in the week. Thanks to the 647.5 composite, the team won a $3,770 paycheck, product from Platinum Performance, a head by Dennis Moreland Tack, a Gist Silversmiths custom buckle, UltraCruz product and a Cowtrac Systems.

Derby Open Novice Horse Champion

Just seven weeks after giving birth to Miss Haldey Grace, NRCHA professional Sarah Dawson, of Perrin, Texas, captured the Open Novice Horse championship title for owners Arcese Quarter Horses and Jeff and Wendy Oswood. The new mother piloted Gunna Be Striking (Gunnatrashya x Moonstruck Cat x High Brow Cat) to a 215.5 in the herd, 219 in the reining and 220.5 down the fence. The 655 composite also earned the duo a spot in the clean-slate Open finals.

Derby Non Pro Finalists Determined

It took a 641.5 score or above to qualify for the Derby Non Pro Finals, a 640 or higher to qualify for the Intermediate Non Pro Finals and a 637.5 or higher to advance to the Novice Non Pro Finals.

The high score of the NRCHA Derby Non Pro preliminaries, a 651.5, belonged to Toni Heath, of La Grande, Oregon, riding Smokum Every Time (One Time Pepto x Smokums Dream x Smokums Prize). The 2015 homebred stallion is owned by Dan Heath.

Derby Non Pro Cow Work High Score

It was a clean sweep for Danielle Quinn, winning all three divisions of the fence work this morning at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Quinn pilot Whenever Wherever (Smart Luck x Travalen Easter x Travalena), owned by D & S Performance Horses, to an impressive 220.5 down the fence! The pair collected $703 in earnings and a spot in the clean-slate finals.

Derby Amateur Champion

Erin Mendes is taking the NRCHA Derby Amateur title home to Kingburg, California. The new mother guided Jans Shiney Rey (Jans Rey Cuatro x Shiney Bit O Ivory x Shining Spark) to a 215.5 in the herd work, 213.5 in the rein work and a 216.5 down the fence. The 645.5 composite earned Mendes a spot in all three finals. The Amateur win was accompanied with $1,768, a Gist Silversmiths custom buckle sponsored by Two Bit Performance Horses, product from UltraCruz, Dennis Moreland Tack headstall, Platinum Performance product and a straw hat from Shorty’s Caboy Hattery.

Derby Non Pro Limited Champion

Shelby Walker was crowned Derby Non Pro Limited Champion aboard SJR Katmandoo. Walker rode her 2014 gelding, by Smooth As A Cat and out of Shiners Diamond Girl, by Shining Spark, to a 648 composite (212 herd/ 214.5 rein/ 221.5 cow). The $2,709 win check comes with a Gist Silversmiths buckle, presented by Two Bit Performance Horses, Dennis Moreland Tack headstall, straw hat from Shorty’s Caboy Hattery and product from UltraCruz and Platinum Performance.

Non Pro Hackamore Champion

Lori Conrow, of Vacaville, California, guided Auspicious Storm (Auspicious Cat x Xtra Smart Swiss x Smart Little Lena) to the Non Pro Hackamore championship and $1,092 win check with a 284 composite (140.5 rein/ 143.5 cow).

Open Hackamore Champion

Claiming top honors in the Open Hackamore was Nick Dowers, Dyer, Nevada. He rode Wares The Nurse (WR This Cats Smart x Nurseware x Dual Rey) , owned by Brigitte Belin, to a 146.5 in the reining and 150.5 down the fence. The 297 composite score came with a $1,440 win check.

Placing first in the Intermediate Open Hackamore was Darrel Norcutt and WR This Cats A Champ (WR This Cats Smart x Zacks Nu Star x Zack T Wood). The Nevada horseman piloted the 2016 gelding, owned by Ty and Melissa Fowler, to 285.5 composite (143.5 rein/142 cow).

NRCHA Derby Spectacular and Horse Show Champions Crowned in Scottsdale, Arizona

Wednesday, June 10 – The fourth day of competition at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack & Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby was a full schedule of horse show classes. Derby entries took a break from the heat while several spectacular and horse show class champions were crowned.

Non Pro Bridle Spectacular Champion

Kate Buchanan brought her A-game to the NRCHA Derby today. The young horsewoman piloted A Time For Jazz (One Time Pepto x Starlight And Jazz x Grays Starlight) to the Non Pro Bridle Spectacular championship with a 441 composite (145.5 herd/146.5 rein/149 cow).

The win came with $3,680, a CR Morrison bronze finished trophy sponsored by Arizona Quarter Horse Association, a certificate to Sami Fine Jewelry, product from Platinum Performance, a straw hat from Shorty’s Caboy Hattery and product from UltraCruz.

Non Pro Bridle Champion

With a 144.5 in the rein work and big 150 down the fence, Ordway, Colorado, competitor, Debbie Crafton, captured the NRCHA Derby Non Pro Bridle title aboard A Quick Remedy (Very Smart Remedy x A Quick Prize x Smokums Prize).

The win was accompanied with a $2,100 paycheck, CR Morrison bronze finished trophy presented by Schrack Drilling Company and Platinum Performance product.

Intermediate & Novice Non Pro Bridle Champion

The NRCHA Derby was twice as nice for Christa Hampton and her 2008 gelding, Smart Time Tucker (Somebody Smart x Smoke Time Tuck x Doc Tom Tucker). Hampton captured the Intermediate and Novice Non Pro Bridle championships. The 291.5 composite (142.5 rein/149 cow) earned the duo two CR Morrison bronze finished trophies sponsored by Schrack Drilling Company, Platinum Performance and a combined paycheck of $2,646.

Select Non Pro Bridle

Winning first place in the Select Non Pro Bridle, $240.00 and a Farnam Horse gift certificate is John Showalter aboard Yellow Roze of Texas (Yellow Roan Of Texas x Plain Cute Sugar x Just Plain Colonel). The pair marked 138.5 in the rein work and 140 down the fence for a 278.5 composite.

Open Two Rein Spectacular & Open Two Rein Champion

Reigning NRCHA Derby Open champions, Bet He Sparks and Clayton Edsall, returned to the prestigious premier event to capture two more championship titles – the Open Two Rein Spectacular and Open Two Rein.

The California horseman piloted Bet He Sparks (Bet Hesa Cat x Sparking Train x Shining Spark), owned by K & L Phillips, LLC, to a 148 in the herd work, 146.5 in the rein work and 151 in the cow work. The 445.5 composite score came with combined winnings of $7,201, a CR Morrison bronzed finished trophy, UltraCruz product, a Dennis Moreland Tack headstall and Platinum Performance.

The Non Pro Two Rein Spectacular and Non Pro Two Rein championship titles belong to Lia Savas, of Central Islip, New York. Savas rode Metallic Nickel (Metallic Cat x Nickel N Dime Smart x Smart Little Lena) to 430 composite (142 herd/143.5 rein/144.5 cow). Open Bridle Champion

For the second year in a row, NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Phillip Ralls was crowned the NRCHA Derby Open Bridle Champion aboard Short N Catt (Sophisticated Catt x Shortys Sugar Sue x Shorty Lena). The Paso Robles, California, horseman scored a 146.5 in the rein work and 149 down the fence for a composite of 295.5 and $1,860 payday for owner Sarah Davis.

Intermediate Open Bridle Champion

Wyatt Fisher, of Nipomo, California, rode Prize Winning Gal (Smokums Prize x Ill Be A Winning Gal x Ill Be Smart), owned by his parents Jayson and Teresa Fisher, to first place in the Intermediate Open Bridle. The 295 composite score (144 rein/ 151 cow) was accompanied with $420 in earnings. This is the second consecutive year this team has claimed the title.

Claiming the Limited Open Bridle championship, for owners, Scott and Darnell Trueblood, was Andrew Steiger aboard Cash Master T (Cat T Masterson x Nu Cash Box x Shining Spark). Steiger earned a 288.5 composite and $1,275 paycheck.

After 25 horses completed the second phase of the Derby Non Pro Limited, it was Elizabeth Poor and Shelby Walker that tied for the go round win. Poor piloted Bet Heza Playboy (Bet Hesa Cat x High Style Cavio x Docs Stylish Oak) to a 214 in the rein work. Walker guided SJR Katmandoo (Smooth As A Cat x Shiners Diamond Girl x Shining Spark) to an identical 214.

The NRCHA Jack and Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby is one of the largest and most prestigious events for 4- and 5- year-old reined cow horses. Shown two-handed in a snaffle bit or a hackamore, horses are judged in three preliminary events: rein work, herd work and cow work. Top scorers from the preliminaries will advance to on to the clean-slate finals on Saturday, June 13, for a chance to win the coveted title of 2020 NRCHA Derby Champion and a share of the more than $330,000 in total payout.

The 2016 stallion, by NRCHA $3 Million Dollar Sire WR This Cats Smart and out of Gracielights, by CD Lights, and Wright lead heading into the fence work 442.5 composite.

Derby Intermediate Open Herd Work High Score

Thanks to a winning score of 221.5 in the herd work preliminaries, Russell Probert is leading the Derby Intermediate Open after two events. Probert and Roo To Do (One Time Pepto x Roosters Chicaroo x Gallo Del Cielo) scored a 217 in the reining earlier in the week for a 438.5 composite. Roo To Do is owned by Dan and Suzy Probert.

Derby Limited Open Herd Work High Score

Splitting first in the Limited Open herd work were Trevor Carter and Danny Sanchez. Carter, of Clovis, New Mexico, rode MC Cowhammer (Metallic Cat x GunSmart Gay x Playgun) to an impressive 219 for owner Bogle Brothers LLC. Sanchez, based out of Weatherford, Texas, guided Donna Russo’s Reyny Day Nickle ( Shiners Nickle x Tootsie Rey x Dual Rey) to an identical 219.

NRCHA Derby Non Pro Herd Work Preliminaries Complete in Scottsdale, Arizona

Monday, June 8 – The second day of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack & Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby is complete. Several horse show spectaculars exhibitors walked through the herd, completing their first of three events on Monday, June 8 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Derby Non Pro and Non Pro Limited riders also worked their way through the herd, placing them one step closer to the prestigious title of 2020 NRCHA Derby Champion.

Open Two Rein Spectacular Herd Work High Score

Open Two Rein Spectacular riders started off the day completing their first of three events – the herd work. 2018 NRCHA Derby Open champions, Justin Wright and Shiners Diamond Cat (WR This Cats Smart x Shiners Diamond Lady x Shining Spark) returned to the Derby, but this year in the two-rein rig. The California horseman and 2014 mare, owned by Mike and James Draper, marked a 150 in herd work this morning. The pair now lead the $5,000-added Open Two Rein Spectacular.

Non Pro Bridle Spectacular Herd Work High Score

A familiar team topped 32 entries in the herd work of the Non Pro Bridle Spectacular. Cutter McLaughlin, of Clarendon, Texas, rode CD Dee Vee Dee (CD Lights x Shiners Missy Jay x Shining Spark) to a score of 147.

Non Pro Two Rein Spectacular Herd Work High Score

Toni Hagen Heath piloted her husband’s horse, Legend De Lena (Smart Peppy Doc x My Legend Del Cielo x Gallo De Cielo), to the lead in the Non Pro Two Rein Spectacular with a score of 144.5 in the herd work. Heath and 2014 homebred gelding were crowned the Tres Osos Performance Horses Derby Non Pro champions in 2019.

Dawn Meinhold, from San Luis Obispo, California, found herself leading the 25-entry Non Pro Limited Derby after the first event. She rode Moms Stilish Lena (Moms Stilish Cat x My Uncles Lena x Rey Dual) to an impressive 216 in the herd work. The 215 gelding is owned by Andrew Meinhold.

Derby Intermediate Non Pro Herd Work High Score

Yesterday, McKenzie Merrill and Suen To Love (Boon Too Suen x Mamas Love Dulces x Dulces Smart Lena) won the Derby Intermediate Non Pro rein work with a 217. Today, their winning streak continued, tying for first place in the herd work with a 218. The Weatherford, Texas, non pro is leading the Intermediate Non Pro composite, after two events, with a 435 composite and is sitting second place in the Non Pro heading into the cow work prelims.

Melissa Garbrick leads the NRCHA Derby Novice Non Pro preliminary composite with a 432. Garbrick, of Ellensburg, Washington, rode Sirly Shine (Very Smart Remedy x Shirley Shine x Shining Spark) to a 216.5, winning the herd work, and a 215.5 in the rein work. The pair are also sitting second in the Intermediate and fourth in the Non Pro.

Derby Amateur Herd Work High Score

NRCHA Derby Rein Work Preliminaries Complete in Scottsdale, Arizona

Sunday, June 7 – The first of three preliminary events at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack & Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby is complete. The rein work preliminaries wrapped up for the Open and Non Pro divisions on Sunday, June 7 at WestWorld of Scottsdale in Arizona. Competitors laid down big scores today, all while keeping their eye on the coveted title of 2020 NRCHA Derby Champion and a share of the more than $330,000 total payout.

Open Derby Rein Work High Score

From the seventh set of the Open Derby rein work preliminaries, Nick Dowers, of Dyer, Nevada, took the lead with an impressive 222 aboard Wares The Nurse. The 2015 stallion, owned by Brigitte Belin, is by NRCHA $3 Million Dollar Sire WR This Cats Smart and out of NurseWare, by Dual Rey. The duo earned $1,973 in go round winnings.

Non Pro Derby Rein Work High Score

Eric Freitas, of Santa Maria, California, and WooodYa (Woody Be Tuff x CR Dees Boon Meow x Peptoboonsmal) captured the NRCHA Derby Non Pro rein work preliminaries with a solid 219.5 score. In 2019, the mare was an Open Snaffle Bit Futurity® finalist with Justin Wright aboard.

The NRCHA Jack and Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby is one of the largest and most prestigious events for 4- and 5- year-old reined cow horses. Shown two-handed in a snaffle bit or a hackamore, horses are judged in three preliminary events: rein work, herd work and cow work. Top scorers from the preliminaries will advance to on to the clean-slate finals on Saturday, June 13, for a chance to win the coveted title of 2020 NRCHA Derby Champion and a share of the more than $330,000 total payout.
